2022 Animal Shelter Intake Summary

AWDC's interpretation of intake definitions:

  • Stray – Animals without a registered owner, found roaming within county jurisdiction and brought into the shelter.
  • Confiscate – Animals taken from their owner or guardian by animal control or police.
  • Euth Req – Animals brought to the shelter by their owner with requests to have them killed by euthanasia.

The RETURN data below displays the number of animal IDs that entered the shelter more than once, regardless of their category/subcategory.

The data below displays the number of animals that entered the shelter under specific subcategories. Please note that all subcategories are labeled by the Public Record Owner, and we do not have all of their definitions.

Reading the table: Of ALL animals that entered the shelter in 2022, 4039 entered as a STRAY from the FIELD. 2353 were brought in OVER THE COUNTER and 149 were categorized as RETURNED.

2022 Animal Shelter Outcome Summary

AWDC's interpretation of outcome definitions:

  • Adoption – Live outcomes where animals exited the shelter with an owner, including those rescued by a 501(c)(3) organization.
  • Died – Animals that are found deceased while under the responsibility of the agency’s care.
  • Euth – Animals killed by euthanasia for various reasons, including behavioral history, medical issues, vet ordered, etc.
  • Missing – Animals found missing from their kennel while in the shelter.
  • RTO – Returned to Owner. This means animals were returned back to the individual that is registered to the animal’s license.
  • Transfer – Animals transferred to another animal shelter or agency.
  • N/A – No outcome was documented in the data provided by the agency.

The table below summarizes the total number of outcomes recorded for each animal type. The GRAND TOTAL column displays the total population for each animal type, and each outcome’s category % is compared to the shelter’s OVERALL population through the year 2022.

For example, of the 2461 dogs in the shelter during 2022, 1740 dogs (71% of all dogs) were rescued or adopted.

The table below shows the total number of animals ADOPTED (including those rescued by 501(c)(3) organizations), per species (columns), broken down into the shelter’s defined subcategories (rows). The GRAND TOTAL column displays the total # of animals adopted under a specific subcategory. Each subcategory % is based on the grand total for that subcategory.

For example, of the 3648 animals ADOPTED in 2022, 1976 (54.17%) animals were adopted by a RESCUE GRP. 

Of the 1796 cats ADOPTED in 2022, 1247 (69.4%) cats were adopted by a RESCUE GRP.

The table below shows the total number of animals killed by EUTHANASIA, per species (columns), broken down into the shelter’s defined subcategories (rows).

To read the table: Of the 1537 animals euthanized in 2022, 628 (40.8%) were euthanized as ORPHANED. Of 950 cats euthanized, 599 (63.1%) were euthanized as ORPHANED.

The table below shows the total number of animals RETURNED TO OWNER, per species (columns), broken down into the shelter’s defined subcategories (rows).

The table below shows the total number of animals that DIED while under the responsibility of the agency’s care, per species (columns), broken down into the shelter’s defined subcategories (rows).

The table below shows the total number of animals TRANSFERRED to another agency, per species (columns), broken down into the shelter’s defined subcategories (rows).

The table below shows the total number of animals found MISSING from their kennel while at the shelter, per species (columns), broken down into the shelter’s defined subcategories (rows).

Length of Stay Breakdown

Length of stay (LOS) is defined as the total number of calendar days between an animal’s intake date and their outcome date.

The data below displays the average # of days each type of animal spent in the shelter in 2022, categorized by outcome, ie: ADOPTION, EUTH, TRANSFER, etc.

Reading the chart (top): Of ALL animals euthanized, the average # of days spent in the shelter before being killed was 5.

Reading the table (bottom): Of ALL dogs euthanized, the average # of days spent in the shelter before being killed was 11. Between ALL outcomes, the average LOS for dogs in the shelter was 14 days.

The data below displays the total # of animals killed by euthanasia on the same day of their intake, comparing total same day euthanasia to overall euthanasia.

Reading the chart (top): Of the 1,081 animals killed by euthanasia on the same day of their intake, 697 were cats.

Reading the table (bottom): Cats killed on intake made up 64% of ALL animals killed on intake, but cats killed on intake made up 45% of ALL animals killed by euthanasia.
